Chapter 12

Doug held the tiny envelope with the tips of his fingers, trying to convince himself he didn’t smell his grandmother’s perfume, or the last batch of cookies or loaf of fresh bread she made.

Not nearly as hard as he was trying not to cry in front of Quinn.

So strange that a series of looping, backward-slanted blue ink marks forming his name could yank him out of his middle-aged life and push him back to being a kid again.

He turned it over and slipped the envelope flap loose, thankful his Grandma hadn’t sealed it. Ripping a gift like this would have broken his already aching heart.

He glanced at Quinn, wondering for a quick second whether she’d read the folded cream-colored paper inside before giving it to him. Her soft smile reminded him who he was dealing with.

Of course she hadn’t. And he was glad a thousand times over she was with him instead of some anonymous person he’d never met until the day before.

He pulled the thick paper out and unfolded it.

My Dearest,

I’m not sure which one of my two wonderful grandbabies will be reading this, so I won’t name names. I will say thank you, thank you, thank you for taking care of the things that are left behind.

Your Grampa and I did everything to make this as easy as it could be. Easy as a thing like this can be. The will lets you do what you need to. I hope one of you or someone else in the family chooses to stay in the house, but we both understand if that doesn’t happen.

We truly do.

Times have changed, and the last thing either one of us would ever want is for any of you to feel burdened with something like a house no one wants or needs.

The only thing that’s not in the will or anywhere else is what you’ll find in the sub-basement. I’m sorry I didn’t get a chance to tell any of you about it before now.

If you’re reading this, my sweet Jenny, I also have to apologize that what you find down there is for Doug. That’s a decision that was long out of my hands, possibly since before I was born.

I always thought I’d have more time, and after I left home, I always thought I’d be going back.

That’s something you should remember about your life. You will eventually do everything for the last time. Often before you realize it.

The family that settled our land and built our house survived horrible storms that year. So they didn’t feel safe enough with a normal basement. My great-grandfather, grandmother, and I have used it for our own purposes.

I have no idea why the treasure within skipped your parents, only that some treasures follow their own secret rules.

To get down there, look for the light switch behind the furnace. My mother made sure it was out of the little ones’ reach when she had it put in. The old way was too dangerous.

No riddles here except the one that amused her and me at the time.
